The war in northern Uganda began in 1986 and has been marked by the LRA's well-documented brutality against civilians, including the seizure of children to be used as fighters and sex slaves, and the widespread use of mutilation, cutting off the lips, ears, noses and limbs of victims.  The violence has led to nearly two million people being displaced from their homes and being forced to live in refugee camps.  Human...

  • Alice Lakot, 29 years old. Kidnapped in 1992. Released eleven years later in 2003. "I managed to escape during a skirmish with the army in the border with Sudan. I married an soon we had Fiona, but her father abandoned us when he found out he was HIV positive. He blamed me for being a rebel. We both have AIDS. Now I´m focusing all my efforts in Fiona having a better life, being able to study and go to school"..Alice Lakot, 29 años .Secuestrada en 1992. Liberada 11 años más tarde en 2003. “Logré escapar durante una escaramuza con el ejército en la frontera con Sudán. Me casé y al poco tiempo tuvimos a Fiona, pero su padre nos abandonó cuando se enteró de que era seropositivo. Me culpaba a mi por ser una rebelde. Ahora ambas tenemos sida. Ahora todos mis esfuerzos se centran en que Fiona tenga una vida mejor, que estudie y que vaya al colegio…”

  • Nighty Akoko, 27 years old. Abuducted in 1991. Released in 2004. "When I was 16 years old I was forced to cub to death a group of civilians who tried to escape from LRA. I try to forget and build a home for me and my sons, but many of my neighbours do not understand that and they don´t accept me as part of the community"...Nighty Akoko, 27 años. Secuestrada en 1991, liberada en 2004. "Cuando tenía 16 años me obligaron a matar a golpes a un grupo de civiles por intentar escapar del LRA. Intento olvidar el pasado y construirme un buen hogar, pero muchos de mis vecinos no lo entienden y se muestran violentos conmigo".

  • Lucy Aold, 22 years old. Kidnapped in 1996. Released four years lter, in1999. Lucy ws one of the few survivors of the Atiak massacre in 1995, when in barely 24 horus a gripo or LRA soldiers took and massacred almost the whole town of Atiak, in the north of the country. "The only lives spared were those of children too young to be kidnapped and pregnant women, who were allowed to stay so that they would look after the children who could be kidnapped in the future. When they finished, we were obliged to clap. Only one year after they came back and took me"..Lucy Aold, 22 años. Secuestrada en 1996. Liberada cuatro años más tarde, en 1999. Lucy fue una de las pocas supervivientes de la matanza de Atiak en 1995 cuando en apenas 24 horas un grupo de soldados del LRA tomaron y masacraron la práctica totalidad de la población de Atiak, en el norte del país. “Solo se salvaron los niños demasiado pequeños para raptarlos y las mujeres embarazadas sólo para que se hicieran cargo de ellos y poder volver en el futuro.   • Florence Lakot, 29 years old. Kidnapped in 1998. Released eight years later, in 2006. For Florence and her two children the worse thing is the stigma and the isolation that comes with it. "I would like to go back to school and give my children a better life than the one I had, but I don´t have any money"...Florence Lakot 29 años. Secuestrada en 1998. Liberada 8 años más tarde, en 2006. Para Florence y sus dos hijos lo peor es el estigma y el aislamiento que supone. Me gustaría volver al colegio y poder dar a mis hijos una vida mejor que la que yo tuve pero no tengo dinero.

  • Daniel Opiyo, 26 years old. Abducted in 1995. Released in 2006. "One of my worst memories? When the UPDF attacked us in Southern Sudan. Many people died and many of us were injuried. I remember they have to heal our wounds using honey and water, because there was not anything else. When I ran away I renounced to my uniform, but when I came back to Uganda, I realized that I´ve been fighting almost my whole life meanwhile everyone was going on with their life.Thinking about that made me feel very, ver confused and lost..."..Daniel Opiyo, 26 años.Secuestrado en 1995. Liberado en 2006. “Uno de mis peores recuerdos es el ataque del ejército a uno de los campamentos de Sudán donde mucha gente murió. Recuerdo que nos curaban las heridas con agua y miel”.Cuando escapé dejé mi uniforme y al volver me di cuenta de que había estado combatiendo toda mi vida mientras el resto seguía adelante. Al pensar en eso me siento muy, muy perdido.

  • Vicky Abuyo, 22 years old. Kidnapped in 1996, released eight years later, in 2004. "In the LRA they beat me constantly becaus I couldn´t understand Acholy (Vicky belongs to the Madir ethnic group), and when I came back my brother disowned me for bearing a child to the rebels... What choice did I have in both cases? Was it my fault?"...Vicky Abuyo, 22 años. Secuestrada en 1996, liberada 8 años más tarde, en 2004. "En el LRA me golpeaban constantemente porque no entendía el acholi (Vicky es de etnia madir) y al volver mi hermano me repudió por haber tenido un hijo de los rebeldes... ¿qué podía hacer en cualquiera de los dos casos? ¿Acaso era culpa mía?" Actualmente está casada con Daniel Opiyo, con quien comparte un hijo.

  • Betty Anyalo, 27 years old. Abducted from 1994 to 2004. "I had my first son when I was 15 years old. I got pregnant from a rebel. In 2004 I was already mother of three chldren. When I finally went back I had terrible times... My husband is also a former child soldier, but now he´s working for the UPDF (Ugandan People Defence Forces). He does´nt care about us and my incomes as a taylor doesn´t afford me to take them to school. I know I´m stigmatized as well as my sons, but we can´t do anything about it. Just hold on..."...Betty Anyalo, 27 años.Secuestrada en 1994 hasta 2004. Tuve mi primer hijo con un rebelde con 15 años. En 2004 ya tenía otros dos. Cuando volví lo pasaba muy mal. Mi marido es también exsoldado pero ahora trabaja para el ejército. No se hace cargo de los niños y mi trabajo como costurera no me permite enviarlos al colegio…Sé que estoy estigmatizada, al igual que mis hijos pero no podemos hacer nada. Solo aguantar".

  • Grace Auma, 26 years old. Abducted in 1995. Released 6 years later, in 2001."After I got abducted I was given to a soldier. The beat me up all the time... Everyone was allowed to have sex with me, but the most terrible thing was fighting all the time with ugandan army... Of course I feel stgmatized, but I cannot afford anything else. I just don´t have money to move."...Grace Aúma, 26 años.Secuestrada e 1995. Liberada 6 años más tarde, en 2001.“Cuando me abdujeron me entregaron a uno de los oficiales. Me golpeaban constantemente. Al principio todos podían tener sexo conmigo, pero lo peor eran los combates constantes con el ejército y las marchas forzosas.Por supuesto que me siento estigmatizada, pero con lo que gano lavando ropa no puedo permitirme mudarme a un lugar mejor”

  • Margaret Aneno, 29 years old. Kidnapped in 1996. Released seven years after, in 1003. She was abducted together with twenty other children in her school. After the first period, Margaret was raped and bore her first child. She lost her left arm in a UPDF operation as a consequence of bullet wounds, bu she wasn´t rescued by the Uganda army until 2003. Her other two children are from different fathers who did´nt take responsability for them....Margaret Aneno, 29 años. Secuestrada en 1996. Liberada 7 años más tarde, en 2003. Fue abducida junto con otros 20 niños de su escuela.Tras su primera menstruación es violada y Margaret tiene su primer hijo. En una operación del UPDF pierde el brazo izquierdo a consecuencia de las heridas de bala, pero no será hasta 2003 cuando el ejército ugandés la rescate. Sus otros dos hijos son fruto de relaciones con padres distintos que no se han hecho cargo de ellos.

  • Florence Akello, 26 years old. Kidnapped in 1996. Released nine years later, in 2005. "I remember beatings and rapes that took place almost everyday in an indiscriminate way" . Upon her retirn she faced rejection, a neighbor even got to raping her elder daughter. "We had a really hard time but after moving to another town we got over it little by little". She remarried in 2009 and had two more children. ...Florence Akello, 26 años.Secuestrada en 1996. Liberada 9 años más tarde, en 2005. “Recuerdo las palizas y violaciones casi a diario y de forma indiscriminada”. A su vuelta encontró muchos problemas de rechazo, incluso un vecino llegó a violar a su hija mayor. Después de aquello lo pasamos muy mal pero tras cambiar de aldea poco a poco lo fuimos superando. En 2009 se casó de nuevo y tiene otros dos niños.

  • John Edward Ojera and his grandchildren Emi Odong and Ivan Okello. His elder son was killed by the LRA rebels and his daughter-in-law died shortly after that. John, a former sax player who even played for Queen Elisabeth II, had to take care of is grndhildren. "I came back to work in the fields, but I´m old ad ther is no one to help me. Sometimes we don´t even have anything to wear"....John Edward Ojera y sus nietos Emi Odong e Ivan Okello Cuando su hijo mayor fue asesinado por los rebeldes del LRA y su yerna murió poco después, John, un antiguo saxofonista que llegó a tocar para la reina Isabel II, tuvo que hacerse cargo de sus nietos. “Volví a trabajar la tierra, pero ya soy muy mayor y no hay nadie que me ayude. A veces no tenemos ni qué ponernos.”

  • Alice Lotabu, 26 years old. Kidnapped in 1998, released six years later, in 2004. "i was 17 years old when I was abducted, I remember we walked for more than 24 hours to get to Sudan. Shortly after that I was fighting in the front against UPDF soldiers. All I did was to run all over while people died around me"....Alice Lotabu, 26 años.Secuestrada en 1998, liberada 6 años más tarde, en 2004. “Tenía 17 años cuando me secuestraron; recuerdo que caminamos más de 24 horas seguidas para llegar a Sudán. Poco después ya estaba combatiendo en el frente contra los soldados del UPDF. Yo sólo corría de un lado a otro mientras la gente moría a mi alrededor”

  • Nacy Abwot, 19 years old. Abducted from 1997 to 2003. "We ambush UPDF near Mount Imatong. It was a slaughter. In Palabek we did the same, but they finally hit me in Koch. When they shot, I just had time to realize I didn´t had energy to run anymore, si I tried to hide myself deep in the bush, and then I collapsed in a dead faint. When I woke up I was surrounded by dead bodies. I felt no pain untill I walked towards a near stream and saw how water fell down my chest when I realized I had lost my lowe jaw"...Nancy Abwot, 19 años. Secuestrada en 1997 hasta 2003. “Emboscamos al UPDF en el monte Imatong. Fue una carnicería. También en Palabek hicimos estragos pero en Koch consiguieron herirme. Cuando me dispararon solo me di cuenta de que no tenía fuerzas para correr, así que traté de esconderme entre la maleza y poco después me desmayé. Al día siguiente cuando me desperté estaba rodeada de cuerpos muertos pero no me dolía nada. Fue cuando intenté beber agua y al ver cómo el agua corría por mi pecho en lugar de por mi garganta me di cuenta que había perdido la mandíbula inferior.

  • Nacy Aromorach, 18 years old. Kidnapped in 2003. She escaped two weeks later."The night they came I was hidden in my school. As I was the younger one, they forced me to guide them to my family and friend´s hideouts. One of them tried to escape. Then, they forced us to cub him to death and slaughter him. They put his remains in a bag and then they left it in the middel of the path."...Nancy Aromorach, 18 años. Secuestrada por el LRA en 2003. Logró escapar tan solo 2 semanas después.La noche en que me encontraron estaba escondida en la escuela de noche. Era la más pequeña y me obligaron a llevarles a los escondites de los demás. Uno de ellos intentó escapar y obligaron a otros niños a apalearlo y trocearlo. Metieron sus restos en una bolsa y los dejaron en el medio del camino…

  • John Otto Baptist, 24 years old. Kidnapped in 1998. Release nine years ater, in 2007. "I was 12 years old whe I was abducted. I got to comand over 200 people. Sudan´s army provided us with weapons, uniforms, food... Everything. But after the Ion Fist operation of the Ugandan government, we were isolated. "We attacked villages and devastated small towns to get food. I lost my leg in one of those skirmishes. Once youré part of the system it is not easy to escape. You accept thas is your life, to kkep killing and being a soldier. I still have nightmares of those days"...John Otto Baptist, 24 años Secuestrado en 1998. Liberado 9 años más tarde, en 2007 . Tenía 12 años cuando me abdujeron. Y llegó a comandar más de 200 personas. El ejército de Sudán nos proporcionaba armamento, uniformes, comida… todo. Pero tras la operación Iron Fist del gobierno ugandés nos quedamos aislados. Atacábamos aldeas y arrasábamos poblados para conseguir alimentos. En una de esas escaramuzas perdí la pierna. Cuando estás en el sistema no es tan fácil escapar. Asumes que tu vida es esa. Seguir matando, seguir siendo un soldado. Aún hoy tengo pesadillas sobre aquellos días…

  • Grace Arach, 25 years old,. Kidnapped in 1996, released five years later, in 2001 "After beig abducted, an official requested me for his house. He treated me fine, but soon Otti Logoni (one of the boodest men in LRA) threatened me with his gun and forced me to go with him.. I was only ten years old. "Grace managed to escape the LRA after walking for days to reach the border with Uganda. She enrolled in school, and after doing two years in one she finished her studies. Currently, Grace holds a degree in Social Work and collaborates with the NGO World Vision to reintegrate former child soldiers like herself....Grace Arach, 24 años. Secuestrada en 1996, liberada cinco años más tarde en 2001. "Tras ser abducida un oficial me pidió para su casa. Me trataba bien, pero pronto Otti Logoni (uno de los hombres más sanguinarios del LRA) me amenazó con su pistola y me obligó a acompañarle… sólo tenía poco más de 10 años". Grace consiguió escapar del LRA tras caminar durante días hasta la frontera con Uganda. Se matriculó en el colegio y, tras cursar dos años en uno completó sus estudios. Actualmente Grace es diplomada en Trabajo Social y colabora con la ong americana World Vision en la reintegración de exniños soldado como ella.
